HMRC Self Assessment — Sole Trader Registration
Ashley Pantry operates One Less Chore as a Sole Trader. This page documents the steps taken to ensure tax compliance from day one.
1. Registration Status
Action: Register for Self Assessment with HMRC. This must be done by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which trading began.
Registration link: gov.uk/register-for-self-assessment
Upon registration, HMRC will issue:
- Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) — a 10-digit number
- Activation code for your online Self Assessment account

2. Filing Deadlines

3. Payment Deadlines
- First payment on account: 31 January 2028
- Second payment on account (if applicable): 31 July 2028
- Balancing payment: 31 January 2029
4. National Insurance Contributions
As a Sole Trader, you pay:
- Class 2 NICs: Flat rate per week if profits exceed the small profits threshold (2026/27 thresholds to be confirmed).
- Class 4 NICs: Percentage of profits above the lower profits limit.
5. Record Keeping
You must keep records of all income and expenses for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline. One Less Chore maintains digital records of:
- All invoices and receipts
- Bank statements
- Mileage logs
- Expense receipts categorised as per the Allowable Expenses page
